Artist Statement

William Tucker (b.1955, Tampa, FL.) is a painter, illustrator and mixed media artist who lives and works in New Orleans, LA.

I typically paint using acrylics and finish with oils but also use inks, spray paints, high flow colors and gold leaf on paper as well as canvases.  My works are inspired by several artists such as Van Gogh, Banksy and Basquiat because of their use of brush strokes and street art telling stories of human existence and the world around us.

I usually start by creating an abstract background and then sketching my subject from a photo source or my imagination. I then refine the composition and create multiple layers of acrylic paint building up the artwork with brushstrokes and transparent glazes.

The main subjects of my work are bees, animals and the oceans. With the loss of habitat and addition of harmful chemicals into our world I want to draw attention to what we are destroying. My goal is to evoke a sense of awe and admiration for the natural world, while also eliciting thoughts about our connection to nature and the effects of our actions.
